Job Overview

Job Description

ASM welcomes microbiologists from across the globe to apply and join the Boards of Editors for the following open access journals: mBio, Microbiology Spectrum, mSphere, and mSystems. We are looking for people who are passionate about advocating for their areas of expertise to be represented in these journals.

Application Process

Interested candidates should submit their application via the Open Water platform during the application period (deadline: April 24 at 11:59 p.m. ET).

We expect Board members to be independent scientific investigators working in academia, government agencies, non-profit research institutions, or industry. In addition to your publication record (number of first and senior/corresponding author papers), we will consider your previous editorial experience and your perspective on why you want to serve on an ASM journal.

Due to the volume of applications, only successful candidates will be contacted by the editorial team.

Qualifications

  • Independent, mid- to senior investigator (for example, assistant professor on tenure track, associate or full professor, or industry equivalent).
  • Staff scientists, PIs, and researchers in industry are also encouraged to apply.
  • PhD students and early postdocs are not eligible; postdoctoral fellows or late postdocs may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Responsibilities

  • Serve a 3-year term beginning July 1, 2026 (can be renewed twice).
  • Manage the peer review of manuscripts assigned to you by the Senior Editor, including inviting reviewers and making initial and final decisions on manuscripts.
  • Attend and actively engage in Board of Editors meetings.
  • Promote the mission and initiatives of the journal via social media, at scientific conferences (especially ASM meetings), and through your professional networks.
  • Uphold high ethical standards in the peer review process and promote reproducible science standards.
