Senior Scientist, Chemistry Integration
Pacific Biosciences is seeking a Senior Scientist to join our Sequencing Chemistry Integration team, a dynamic group driving the development of next-generation DNA sequencing technology. This position offers the opportunity to work in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment with R&D and Process Development scientists and engineers from a variety of disciplines.
The selected individual will play a key role in the development, optimization, and integration of new chemistries, reagents, and workflows for the Pacific Biosciences SMRT™ sequencing platforms. Responsibilities will include reagent preparation, experimental design, testing and optimization of new reagents and protocols, and performance evaluation on both commercial and prototype instruments. This role requires close cross-functional collaboration, hands-on laboratory execution, and rigorous data analysis.
Responsibilities
- Design, plan, and execute experiments using commercial and prototype instrumentation to test and advance sequencing chemistry for SMRT™ technology.
- Analyze experimental results, interpret data, and draw conclusions that inform next steps in product development.
- Present findings at weekly group and departmental meetings.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (e.g., chemistry, molecular biology, process development, engineering, bioinformatics) to ensure seamless integration of workflows and reagents.
- Contribute to laboratory operations, including reagent management and maintaining high laboratory standards.
- Participate in cross-functional and intra-team projects to support sequencing integration efforts.
- Document experimental designs, results, and conclusions in electronic lab notebooks with a focus on reproducibility and knowledge transfer.
- Contribute to intellectual property generation through invention disclosures and patent applications, where applicable.
Required Qualifications:
- PhD in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Chemistry, or a related scientific discipline with a minimum of 2-5 years related experience; OR a Master’s degree with a minimum of 5-8 years of related experience; OR, in exceptional cases, a Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 7-10 years of related experience.
- Hands-on experience with library preparation methods and a strong practical understanding of enzymatic reaction kinetics.
- Working knowledge of fluorescence and its applications in biochemical assays.
- Demonstrated laboratory expertise in reagent preparation, bulk formulations, and assay development.
- Technical proficiency in general laboratory practices (biochemistry and molecular biology required).
- Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills.
- Meticulous attention to detail, excellent record-keeping, and strong organizational abilities.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly present complex data.
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
- Self-motivated, independent, and able to operate with minimal supervision.
Preferred Experience:
- Experience analyzing large datasets in R, Python, or other statistical/computational tools is preferred.
- Experience working with complex prototype instrumentation is desirable.
- Familiarity with regulated product development environments (e.g., ISO, GMP) is a plus.
- Experience collaborating with bioinformatics and data science teams to correlate sequencing performance with chemistry improvements is highly desirable.
This role is not eligible for visa sponsorship.
