Job Overview

Job Description

I’m excited to announce that I have two NIH-funded postdoc positions available immediately in my lab.  Position #1 will focus on structural and biophysical studies of staphylococcal cell-surface proteins involved in host adherence and biofilm formation.  A major focus is to use cryoEM to determine how the proteins Aap and SasG form rope-like oligomers and functional amyloid fibers between bacterial cells in a biofilm.  Position #2 will characterize bacterial proteins that work on dendritic cells to trigger Th17 host immune responses. The primary focus is to identify and characterize the critical bacterial proteins, which may include higher-order assemblies of individual proteins, complexes between multiple proteins, and/or post-translational modifications. The ideal candidates would have expertise in cryoEM (for position #1) and quantitative biophysical techniques (e.g., analytical ultracentrifugation, surface plasmon resonance, isothermal titration calorimetry, circular dichroism) along with experience in cloning and protein purification.

The Herr lab is in the Division of Immunobiology at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC), a top-ranked pediatric research institute.  CCHMC has state-of-the-art instrumentation and research cores. We have access to a cryoEM facility at the new Center for Advanced Structural Biology across the street at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, and we are part of a large collaborative community of scientists with expertise in structural biology and biophysics.  Cincinnati is a beautiful city with great arts, sports, and dining along with an abundance of green space for hiking, biking, and other outdoor activities.  In addition to a great quality of life, Cincinnati is known for an unusually low cost of living.  Cincinnati was recently rated as the best city in the US for recent college graduates for four years in a row, and Cincinnati was ranked #8 on the NY Times list of “52 Places to Go in 2018.”

If interested, please send a cover letter, CV, and 3 references by email to Andrew Herr at Andrew.Herr@CCHMC.org.
