About The Role

This application is for a 6-month student role from January – June 2026. Resume review begins in October 2025.

Biogen is seeking a creative co-op to join the Bioassays and High-Throughput Screens (BHTS) group within the Synthetic Medicines Design (SMD)) department in Cambridge, MA.

What You’ll Do

As a co-op student, you will:

  • Learn and apply cutting-edge technologies in early drug discovery to develop cell based or biochemical assays to identify and characterize molecules that modulate disease causing mechanisms or pathways
  • Use a variety of detection methods, including mass spectrometry, radiometry, luminescence, fluorescence, etc.
  • Gain experience in high throughput, in vitro techniques, including but not limited to, bioassay automation, cell culture, cell membrane extraction, ELISAs, and mass spectrometry-based assays.
  • Develop microplate-based kinetics assays to characterize drug molecule interaction with therapeutic targets of interest
  • Learn and apply data analysis and visualization techniques of bioassay data to inform on next steps for designing medicines

Required Qualifications

  • GPA of 3.2 or higher preferred
  • Basic laboratory experience and good attention to detail
  • Good documentation, communication and inter-personal skills
  • Efficiently manage time to enable pursuit of multiple objectives in parallel

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in testing small molecules in cell-based or biochemical assays in 384- or 1536-well plates and working knowledge of semi-automated liquid handling
  • Experience in assays such as MSD, ELISA, cell reporter assays, with Fluorescence (TR-FRET or HTRF) or luminescence readouts.
  • Experience on kinetic assay development for kinases.
  • Experience performing data analysis and visualization using appropriate software

To participate in the Biogen Internship or Co-op Program, students must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S.
  • At least 18 years of age prior to the scheduled start date.
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited community college, college, university or skills program/apprenticeship.

Education

  • Undergraduate Junior/Senior students. Master or PhD students are highly preferred
  • Majoring in: Biology, Biochemistry, Biological/Biomedical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or a related field.

Additional Information

The base compensation range for this role is: $25.00-$33.00

The actual hourly wage offered will consider the candidate’s current academic level and degree candidacy, inclusive of Associate, Bachelor’s, Master’s, JD, MD, PhD and MBA programs. It will comply with state or local minimum wage requirements specific to the job location.
