Job Description

Discovery Biotherapeutics and Genetic Medicine (BGM) at AbbVie is seeking a highly motivated and experienced scientist to join the Protein Sciences Analytical Team in Worcester, MA. This position provides a unique opportunity to directly impact multiple Discovery Research Therapeutic Areas (TAs) and projects by delivering in-depth analytical and functional characterization of biologics and biopharmaceutical products—including complex protein antigens, monoclonal antibodies, multi-specifics, and other antibody-like biologics. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in protein analytical characterization, with expertise in structural mass spectrometry, including hydrogen-deuterium exchange mass spectrometry (HDX-MS), crosslinking mass spectrometry (XL-MS), and covalent labeling mass spectrometry (CL-MS) to characterize epitopes and antigen-antibody interactions. The successful candidate will foster productive collaborations across functional groups and therapeutic areas. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated scientist to make a significant impact in a collaborative and innovative environment. Join us in bringing innovative medicines to patients!

Key Responsibilities:

  • Independently develop and execute high-throughput HDX-MS workflows for epitope mapping analysis of biotherapeutics to support discovery pipeline projects.
  • Develop, optimize, validate, and apply innovative structural MS methods (including XL-MS and CL-MS) to characterize epitopes and antigen-antibody interactions.
  • Demonstrate scientific initiative and creativity by establishing novel workflows and strategies for the characterization and screening of biologics—including non-traditional modalities such as multi-specifics, alternative scaffolds, and fusion proteins—to support BGM and TA projects.
  • Collaborate with external partners, CROs, or vendors to advance project objectives.
  • Analyze, document, and report data concisely; formulate conclusions and design follow-on experiments based on multidisciplinary inputs.
  • Resolve key project challenges by leveraging analytical tools, information, and technical expertise.
  • Communicate project progress, data analyses, and technical recommendations clearly and promptly to cross-functional teams and senior management.
  • Present original research and findings internally and at external scientific conferences; contribute to scientific papers, patents, and technical reports as an author or co-author.

Qualifications

  • BS or MS or PhD in biology, chemistry, biochemistry or related field with typically 10-12+ (BS), 8-10+ (MS) or 0-4+ (PhD) years of experience.
  • Extensive hands-on experience with HDX-MS platforms (e.g., Trajan’s LEAP HDX automation) and use of HDX-MS data analysis software (e.g., HDExaminer) for epitope mapping analysis.
  • Strong knowledge of structural mass spectrometry technologies, including covalent labeling MS, and crosslinking MS.
  • Advanced proficiency with multiple mass spectrometry platforms (such as Orbitrap and Q-ToF), including MS workflows for protein characterization and expertise with relevant data analysis software.
  • Familiarity or experience with coding/programming (e.g., Python, R, or relevant scripting languages) and in developing automated data workflows or solutions is preferred.
  • Familiarity with biophysical and structural methods, such as DLS, DSF, SEC-MALS, SEC-SAX, X-ray crystallography, etc. is a plus
  • Demonstrated theoretical and hands-on expertise in scientific disciplines, with a proven ability to rapidly learn and apply new technologies.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects and tasks concurrently while meeting deadlines.
  • Collaborative, goal-driven professional with strong verbal and written communication skills, a proactive attitude, and success operating in fast-paced, cross-functional environments.

Key AbbVie Competencies:

  • Builds strong relationships with peers and cross functionally with partners outside of the team to enable high performance.
  • Learns fast, grasps the “essence” and can change course quickly when indicated.
  • Raises the bar and is never satisfied with the status quo.
  • Creates a learning environment, open to suggestions and experimentation for improvement.
  • Embraces the ideas of others, nurtures innovation and manages innovation to reality.

Position will be filled at level commensurate with extent of education, experience, and accomplishment – Senior Scientist I or Senior Scientist II
