Job Description
Early-career researchers now have a prestigious global opportunity to showcase their work through the Science & SciLifeLab Prize for Young Scientists, an international award designed to recognize outstanding PhD research in life sciences. Jointly organized by Science Magazine, American Association for the Advancement of Science, and SciLifeLab, the prize aims to support and celebrate scientists at the start of their careers.
Established in 2013, the prize is awarded annually to four young researchers whose doctoral work demonstrates exceptional scientific contribution and innovation. Applicants submit an essay based on their PhD thesis, which is evaluated by the editorial board of Science. From this pool, one Grand Prize winner receives $30,000, while three category winners are awarded $10,000 each.
Beyond the monetary reward, winners gain global recognition. The Grand Prize essay is published in Science, while other winning essays are featured online. All four winners are invited to Stockholm, Sweden, for an exclusive week of scientific engagement, networking with leading researchers, and presenting their work on an international stage. The award ceremony takes place at the iconic Grand Hôtel—the original venue of the Nobel Prize banquet—adding a historic dimension to the honor.
The prize focuses on four key areas of life sciences:
- Cell and Molecular Biology
- Genomics and Proteomics
- Ecology and Environment
- Molecular Medicine
Eligibility is limited to researchers who have earned their PhD within the past two years, ensuring that the award specifically supports those in the early stages of their scientific journey.
Organizers emphasize that nurturing young scientific talent is critical, especially in today’s challenging research funding environment. By providing financial support, global exposure, and access to top-tier scientific networks, the initiative aims to encourage the next generation of researchers to continue pushing the boundaries of discovery.
