2026 Summer Intern – Structural Biology / Physiological Chemistry

Department Summary: 

The mission of the Department of Physiological Chemistry is to investigate cell death and inflammation pathways of importance to human disease.
 

The Department of Physiological Chemistry is looking for a self-motivated and detail-oriented intern for the summer of 2026. This is a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in cutting-edge scientific research, specifically in protein biochemistry and cryogenic electron microscopy (cryoEM).

The successful candidate will work in a collaborative environment, contributing to studies focused on the scientific mechanisms of cell death and inflammation. Under the guidance of a mentor, the intern will conduct experiments utilizing state-of-the-art instruments and will have the chance to collaborate with scientists across various departments. This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site

The Opportunity

  • Perform protein expression and purification.
  • Conduct structural studies using cryoEM.
  • Apply various biochemical/biophysical techniques. 
  • Present and discuss data during team meetings. 
  • Maintain accurate laboratory documentation.

Program Highlights

  •  Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.
  • Program start dates are in May/June (Summer)
  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship. 
  • Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.

Who You Are 

Required Education:

  • Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student) with at least 2 years of lab experience


Required Mayors: Structural biology, Biophysics, Biochemistry or a related field

Required Skills:

Experience with protein purification

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications

  • Experience with cryoEM
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
  • Detail-oriented with exceptional organization skills.

Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting. 

The expected salary for this position based on the primary location of  California is $46.00 hour.  Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.​
