Job Description
We’re hiring in Augsburg!
Looking for a postdoc in bioinformatics with a focus on single-cell / multi-omics data at our Augsburg Bioinformatics Core Facility.
Great mix of collaborative projects + method development, working closely with clinicians and researchers on translational topics.
If you (or someone in your network) might be interested, feel free to reach out or apply directly at office.sysmed@informatik.uni-augsburg.de.
Deadline: April 30, 2026
At the University of Augsburg for the Augsburg Bioinformatics Core Facility (ABC) with a focus
on single-cell data analysis and scientific support of biomedical research projects is seeking to fill,
at the earliest possible date, a position for a
Research Associate (m/f/d) at postdoctoral level
The position will initially be filled as a civil servant on a fixed-term basis (Beamten-verhältnis auf
Zeit) for a period of three years at full-time hours. The position is suitable for part-time
employment. Subsequently, a transition to a probationary/permanent civil servant position
(Beamtenverhältnis auf Probe/Lebenszeit) as a Research Associate is intended.
The successful candidate will work closely, as a scientific collaborator, with the leadership of the
ABC as well as with internationally recognized scientists, faculty members, clinical researchers,
and bioinformaticians. A particular focus will be on the integration of single-cell and multi-omics
data in translational research projects.
The position is organizationally affiliated with the Modeling and Simulation of Biological Processes
Lab at the University of Augsburg. The lab integrates quantitative systems modeling with advanced
AI and machine learning approaches to identify novel therapeutic strategies for cancer and other
diseases, leveraging cutting-edge technologies such as single-cell sequencing and deep learning
to decode complex disease mechanisms and improve patient outcomes.
Role within the Core Facility
- The position combines scientific service with method development and collaborative
research. The successful candidate will contribute to core facility operations by supporting
and advising multiple projects, while also having dedicated time for the development of
advanced single-cell and multi-omics analysis methods. Active intellectual contribution to
study design, data interpretation, and publications is expected and encouraged.
Key Responsibilities - Scientific and organizational contributions to the ABC core facility, with a primary focus on
single-cell sequencing data analysis (e.g., scRNA-seq, scATAC-seq, multimodal single-cell
data), and the analysis of bulk NGS data from normal and tumor tissue samples. - Proactive consultation and support of research projects at the University of Augsburg and
partner institutions (UKA), especially in experimental design, data analysis strategies, and
interpretation of both single-cell and bulk sequencing data. - Development, adaptation, and application of bioinformatic workflows for single-cell, bulk
transcriptomics, and related omics analyses. - Contribution to data integration approaches, combining single-cell data with bulk omics,
clinical, and phenotypic data. - Documentation, reproducibility, and quality assurance of analysis pipelines used within the
core facility. - Contribute to teaching and training (workshops/tutorials) in line with institutional
requirements. - Support of scientific publications through high-quality data analysis and visualization.
Your Profile: - A completed PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, systems biology, data science,
or a related field. - Demonstrated expertise in single-cell sequencing data analysis.
- Solid programming skills, preferably in Python and/or R, and experience with established
bioinformatics tools and frameworks. - Proven experience with workflow management systems (e.g., Snakemake, Nextflow) and
controlled software environments (e.g., Docker, Singularity, Conda). - Strong interest in interdisciplinary collaboration and proactive outreach, particularly at the
interface of medicine, biology, and computer science. - Experience with HPC environments and large-scale data analysis.
- Ability to work independently, reliably, and in a service-oriented core facility environment.
- Very good command of English; basic knowledge of German is also required.
We Offer: - Opportunities for independent work and leadership.
- A scientifically engaging postdoctoral-level position within a well-established and
collaborative bioinformatics core facility. - Intellectual ownership and active involvement in high-impact single-cell and multi-omics
research projects with clinical and translational relevance. - Access to state-of-the-art single-cell technologies, high-performance computing
infrastructure, and modern bioinformatics workflows. - Close collaboration with interdisciplinary teams spanning biology, medicine, and
computational sciences. - Opportunities for professional development, including training, conference
participation, and method development. - Flexible and family-friendly working conditions within an international research
environment. - Employment and remuneration according to pay grade A13 under the applicable
public-sector regulations. Initially appointed as a civil servant on a fixed-term basis for
three years, with the option of tenure in a probationary/permanent civil servant
position. - A secure, inclusive, and stimulating working environment within a public research
institution.
