Job Overview

Job Description

This PhD project aims to advance and consolidate reinforcement learning methods for the smart control of biotechnological processes, with a focus on generalization, knowledge transfer, and computational efficiency. The project will deliver ad hoc computational frameworks to address real-world bioprocess complexity. State-of-the-art biotechnological and metabolic systems will serve as case studies, with international collaboration opportunities for the experimental implementation of the computational methods.

Ideal Candidate

MSc in chemical/(bio)process engineering, systems biology, data science, or related fields. Experience with Python and machine learning frameworks is expected; prior exposure to bioprocesses or metabolic engineering is a plus but not essential. Candidates should be passionate about advancing the digitalization of bioprocesses. Availability to begin in 2026.

Benefits

4-year structured PhD program at University College Dublin. Competitive funding (monthly stipend and dedicated research budget).

Interested candidates should email a single PDF containing their CV, academic transcripts, and a letter of motivation to Dr. Sebastián Espinel Ríos (sebastian.espinelrios@ucd.ie).
