Job Description
Together with my colleague Lena Svensson, I am pleased to announce the opening of PhD positions in our research groups at the Department of Molecular Biology, Umeå University, Sweden.
My team is part of the MIMS / UCMR environment, offering an excellent setting for cutting-edge research. The projects will address important questions in immune system evolution and molecular infection biology, providing opportunities for interdisciplinary training and collaboration.

We welcome highly motivated students with a strong interest in molecular biology, evolution, and immunology to apply and join our dynamic research environment. Please feel free to share this announcement within your networks.
PhD project 1:
- The PhD project involves research using invertebrate model systems to investigate the mechanisms by which potential host genome editing processes enhance antigen receptor diversity, contributing to a deeper understanding of the human immune system. The experimental work will involve a variety of advanced techniques, including CRISPR/Cas9-based mutagenesis, imaging, genomics, and single-cell transcriptomics. The project and research environment will give the dedicated student the opportunity to train as a first-class researcher.
PhD project 2:
- The PhD project involves research using human cells to investigate how tumor cells can escape immune surveillance by hijacking the immune system signaling pathways and adhesion molecules. The experimental work will involve a variety of advanced techniques, including high end microscopy, molecular and biochemistry techniques as lipid bilayers. The scientific interests and background of the PhD student will be a major factor in the design of the project. The project and research environment will give the dedicated student the opportunity to train as a first-class researcher.
A person who is employed as a PhD student shall primarily devote his-/or herself to his/her own education.
Eligibility
Applicants must hold a University degree equivalent to a European University Master degree or completed course requirements of at least 240 credit points, of which at least 60 credit points should be at second-cycle level. Required is a minimum of 30 credits in the main field of chemistry, including at least 7.5 credits biochemistry; 45 credits in the major areas of biology or molecular biology with at least 7.5 credits in genetics and 22,5 credits in the fields of microbiology, physiology and cell-and molecular biology. Additionally, at least 45 credits from second cycle studies in cell- and molecular biology including an independent work of at least 15 credits is required.
You must be proficient in both oral and written communication in English.
Qualifications
PhD Project 1:
- You should have prior experience with basic laboratory techniques. Experience in immunology, developmental biology, imaging techniques, microinjection, and CRISPR/Cas9-based mutagenesis will be highly valued. Experience in bioinformatics or a willingness to develop such skills is considered an asset. Please visit the website for our team vision in Morimoto lab.
Phd Project 2:
- You should have prior experience with basic laboratory techniques. Experience in immunology, cell and molecular biology, imaging techniques and CRISPR/Cas9-based will be highly valuated. Experience in programing in image analysis or a willingness to develop such skills is considered an asset. Please visit the lab website of Lena Svensson.
You should be highly motivated and able to work productively in a team as well as independently. Excellent communication skills for interacting effectively with senior colleagues and peers are required. Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.

Basis of assessment
The evaluation of the ability and potential to assimilate the education is mainly based on:
- Knowledge and skills relevant to doctoral studies within the research area,
- The ability to formulate and solve scientific questions.
- Skills in written and oral communication in English.
- Other experience relevant to doctoral studies, such as professional experience.
Good collaborative skills, drive and independent work ability are considered as positive merits.
A selection will be made among qualified applicants on the basis of their qualifications and their ability to benefit from studies at the doctoral level. After the selection of the suitable candidate, the process for the admission to doctoral studies will commence. An admission decision will be taken by the faculty’s director of studies.
