Job Description
Our algae group (https://lnkd.in/dvtGy3ar) at UCD School of Biosystems & Food Engineering and UCD Conway Institute is currently seeking an exceptional PhD student for a fully-funded walsh scholarship aimed at investigating Biorefinery Strategies to Extract High-Value Compounds from Microalgae. The student will be jointly based in Brijesh K. Tiwari‘s group at Teagasc Ashtown and my group at University College Dublin.
The Walsh Fellow will receive structured training opportunities at both institutions while also contributing to a European consortium in a recently funded FutureFoodS project led by Wageningen University & Research.
This doctoral research will develop an innovative biorefinery approach to directly fractionate wet microalgal biomass into protein- and lipid-rich ingredients without the need for costly drying. The research aims to support the development of climate-resilient, circular food systems and accelerate the use of microalgae as a food ingredient.
The scholar will receive:
• €25,000 annual stipend (tax-free)
• University fees covered
• Four-year structured doctoral programme
• Opportunities for international research placement
Application deadline: 29 May 2026
PhD commencement: September 2026
