Job Overview

Job Description

Why does Klebsiella carry so many hidden viruses? I now have funding to find out, and I’m hiring! I’m excited to share that my project “The role of prophages and their gene flow in the adaptation of Klebsiella to new environments” has been funded by the National Science Centre (NCN) in the SONATA 21 call and will soon start at Uniwersytet Wrocławski 🎉. More info about the new grants within the University: https://lnkd.in/d5vA6y3e 🦠 Klebsiella bacteria carry an unusually large number of prophages 🧬: viral genomes built into the bacterial chromosome. We want to understand why, and how these viruses shape the bacteria’s ability to adapt to new environments 🌍. The answers should help explain why Klebsiella is so successful, both ecologically and epidemiologically, and could lead to better ways to monitor and control these dangerous pathogens 🛡️ 🔍 I’m looking for a postdoc to join the team at the University of Wrocław You’d be a great fit if you: – have strong bioinformatics skills, ideally with bacterial or phage genomics – are excellent at data analysis: statistics, large datasets, reproducible workflows (R/Python) – enjoy questions at the intersection of evolution, ecology and microbiology – hold a PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, microbiology, data science or a related field What we offer: 📅 Up to 3-year position 🚀 Starting in 2026 💰 Good NCN salary 🤝 A friendly, collaborative group 🧭 Plenty of freedom to develop your own ideas 📩 Interested? Send me a message or email bogna.smug@gmail.com. Please share this with anyone who might be a good fit! The project members will join the Department of Pathogen Biology and Immunology led by Zuzanna Drulis-Kawa and will engage in close collaboration with the experimental group within the Department. Thank you to NCN Narodowe Centrum Nauki, Uniwersytet Wrocławski, our key collaborators Rafał Mostowy Edward Feil, Eduardo PC Rocha, Bas E. Dutilh and to everyone who supported this proposal 🙏
