Job Description
The Life Science Zurich Graduate School, run jointly by ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich, recruits PhD students twice a year through a central call. The next round closes on 1 November 2026, and the school typically fills 80 to 100 PhD projects per round. The call is open to Swiss and international students, including from outside the EU. You need a university master’s degree, or equivalent, in the natural sciences, computer science or engineering. You can apply before finishing, as long as you get your degree within 6 months of the application deadline. You also need good spoken and written English. The positions are funded employment, and the salary depends on the university. At the University of Zurich, PhD students employed at 60% earn CHF 48,686.40 in the first year, rising to CHF 51,791.40 in the third and fourth years. ETH Zurich lists CHF 50,700 in the first year, rising to CHF 53,900 from the third year, based on January 2024 rates. A PhD usually takes about 4 years, and accepted students can start at any time of the year. You apply through the school’s online tool, uploading PDF files only. You choose a first-choice and second-choice PhD programme, such as Molecular Life Sciences, Neuroscience, or Microbiology and Immunology. Two recommendation letters are requested, and you can upload up to four. There is no application fee. The list of open positions is only published after the deadline. Shortlisted candidates have online interviews in mid-December 2026. Those selected are then invited to Zurich in week 3 of January 2027, with travel reimbursed and free accommodation. Since letters are part of the application, it is worth asking your referees soon.
